ANKANA
Torso # 8 is part of a larger body of work, The Torso Series, by ANKANA.
This series started as a way to work through trauma in the body, physical and spiritual. Creating The Torso Series became a meditation and a study on what the body is capable of, the healing power of nature, the imagination and how that can translate into reality, into a healing self.
ANKANA (she/her), a self-taught multimedia artist, is originally from Assam, India. Her earliest exposure to art came from seeing the elders in her family creating with found objects and organic materials. From seeing her father paint to the fiber work creations by the women in her family, these exposures formed her connection to art and passion for creating.
Being surrounded by and finding sanctuary in nature during her early childhood deeply influenced ANKANA, that influence permeates her work today.
She experiments with ink, acrylic paint, watercolor, fiber, collage and digital photography, creating surreal imagery with elements of fantasy, grounded in reality as she experiences it. Using detailed patterns and bright, earthy colors, her work centers on and celebrates nature and femme folks in a positive way.
