“Broke Open”ARTIST STATEMENT:I work with surfaces that have already lived another life—curbside furniture, scrap wood, discarded canvases. My materials, too, are often castoffs: mismixed house paint from hardware store shelves, torn postcards, old tarot cards, and fragments of paper layered into the work.Each piece evolves through trial and error. A painting might begin with an I Ching reading or no clear direction at all, but its path unfolds through a process of layering, scraping, adding, and removing. I paint a layer, erase what doesn’t fit, glue something down, tear something away—shaping the work until either exhaustion or a sense of completion sets in.
Chance plays an essential role. The materials resist and respond, guiding the piece as much as I do. The result is a record of this unfolding, a conversation between accident and intention, presence and impermanence.
Yago Colás is a multidisciplinary artist and writer whose work explores the intersections of perception, impermanence, and the unseen. Rooted in Zen practice, their paintings emerge through intuitive experimentation and chance operations, engaging with texture, gesture, and presence. This is their first time exhibiting paintings at 50 Arrow Gallery.
